MWT 2013
Getting to the fields Saturday morning, there was excitement, but also a little hesitation about the cold weather. Honestly, I was pretty excited the tournament happened. We put on our cleats and pretty much every layer we could find in the parking lot listening to some throwbacks on Boomy.
Our first game vs WUWU was fun and spirited, it was great to get out there and play, despite the cold weather, and it wasn’t even THAT cold. Next we played Emory in another very spirited game. Which started out with a huge layout grab by an Emory girl!!
The third game was vs. Northewestern, after going up 1 or 2 breaks at the end of the game, Northwestern came back and took the game on universe. It was a really tough hard fought game.
Scorned then played Purdue. I had never played them before, but they were a very speedy team. They also pretty much caught everything. It was a close game, until Scorned was able to score an upwind break. At the same time Miles (the dog) was rolling on something which ended up being a dead mouse. Kevin trying to get the team pumped up, proceeded to stomp on the mouse, at which point it got stuck on the bottom of his shoe. After Gapstur picked it off with her bare hands, Scorned was then able to score the downwind break, and put ourselves in a position to take the game. Thanks to the Purdue ladies for a great game.
After games, everyone on our team went to the skills clinic, (everyone learned at least one thing so it was awesome) and although very cold proved to be beneficial for everyone. Thanks to Michelle and all the guest coaches for that opportunity.
Then butcher’s dad made us an awesome dinner, and let us use his hot tub, some movies were watched, some homework done, and Miles took an extremely long nap outside.
Sunday morning came pretty early, and although an alarm mishap at one of the houses, we all managed to make it to the fields on time to warm up for the Kansas game. Scorned came out and proved that we were ready to play and win during the Betty’s game. Everyone was making sick cuts, and getting D’s as well as some crazy cheering on the sidelines. It was also very good to have Becca back! Scorned ended up getting a couple breaks, and getting in a good position to take the game. Kelly Shiro kicked butt this game scoring like 2 or 3 points, the last point of the game being from Kelly to Kelly.
The next game was vs. Minnesota. Knowing a lot of people on the ninjas I know they had been doing well this tournament, deservingly so. They had great players, and have been working very hard. The game vs. them was super competitive and hard fought. After being down 3 points (or so) scorned was able to fight back and take them to universe. Although we couldn’t pull it off it was by far the best most competitive game we played during the tournament, and its great to play against such strong in-region teams.
The 3rd place game was vs. Colorado State, hells bells. Always a super fun spirited team. They also have essentially the same logo as us. Everyone played well this game, despite coming off a close loss. It was so cool to see everyone making such great cuts on O, and big plays on D. Oliver had a huge bid on O that last point of the game. Thanks to the Hells Bells ladies for such a great game
As a team we did a lot of things well this weekend, but we also did a lot of things not so well. Lucky for us we have 3 weeks till our next tournament, Centex. Kevin and Lana took note of the things we need to work on, and I am sure these next 2 weeks we will be working hard.
I was so proud of all of my teammates this weekend, I felt that everyone worked hard, and improved some aspect of their game. I don’t remember much of what happened in specific games, but I remember how my teammates played. Here is some of what I remember.
Alyssa (My PUB) - scored an upwind break in the Minnesota game, the fire and passion in her eyes when she scored was something I had never seen before, and I have a feeling she will be unleashing that same fire in the rest of our games to come.
Pesch continues to improve her defense, and uses her size to make big plays on D.
Kaira and Sam worked to improve their chemistry, working on patience, breaks, and overall handler domination.
Kate played phenomenal D as always, but proved to be a strong dominating handler taking control of the offense.
Janani, Weino, and Jess came out hard in their first spring tournament, proving that they could use what they had been practicing. Playing very different roles than last year, they developed new chemistry with teammates, while working that disc up the field together.
Kelly Smith proved even more consistent than at Queen City. She played both handler and cutter with her great continue cuts, sticky hand and big grabs. We are very lucky to have her with us this season.
Oliver was back and better than ever, this girl is quick, plays awesome D, and always seems to be in the right place, so lucky she came back and is joining us this year for another season!
Anne was solid as ever rocking those sideline cuts, specifically catching a very tricky over the back huck to score in the endzone.
Mag was calm and collected as usual, making every bid, throw catch look effortless. She is able to play every point with such a high intensity, no matter what the score or conditions of the game.
Becca was a force to be reckoned with on Sunday, playing a huge number of points. She is able to stay incredibly positive no matter the score of the game, and her teammates feed off it.
Our rookies are absolutely incredible.
Brittnee has been playing for about 4 weeks now, and her offensive cuts and catches make her look like she has been playing for years.
Stu Liu – Magon has definitely taught this girl a thing or two about cutting. Not sure where she gets the feisty-ness from though. When she is playing defense you do not want to mess with her.
Ellen – She eats D’s for breakfast, I bet she got like 10 this weekend.
Marissa – Makes deep cuts like a champ, this girl is fast and aggressive. She also is a Zumba instructor #score
Kelly Shiro- May have been a little timid at Queen City, but was more aggressive this tournament. Especially in the Betty’s game, she made D’s and then scored like 3 points! One being Kelly to Kelly! She can also be given the credit for the Purdue win because of her role as Boomy’s keeper.
Thanks to our coaches, Butcher’s Family and Blake and Gibbs for allowing us to stay at their house. Thanks to our fans that came out and watched; Jazz, Joes, Gap, Gibbs, Blake, Amy, Seth, Butcher, Miles the dog, Sidney the dog, Ben, Kate, and everyone who followed us over the weekend on our sideline and afar. Sorry for the lack of tweets.
Big shout out to BOWS! Who although didn’t make it to the tournament, represented our club, and got us money for next year!! Thanks Bows!

QCTU recap
The ride to Charlotte was surprisingly mild
due to an awesome half way point at Cassie’s house. Her parents stayed up late
until we got in, and introduced us to all of their animals. They also made us
an amazing breakfast the next morning. It gave us the energy to spend the last
7 hours in the car and roll into Charlotte around 7pm. After Coach K gave a pretty solid pre tourney
talk, scorned headed to bed dreaming of warm weather and grass fields.
Arriving to the fields I know I wasn’t the only one with
butterflies. It was such an exciting moment to pull up and see all the teams
throwing, and warming up. It finally had hit me that the spring season had
started. It felt so good to listen to some ke$ha on boomy , and lace up my
cleats.
During our first game against Maryland (helpful corn) nerves
were high, for 7 of our 14 players it was their first spring tournament with
scorned. For 2 it was their first college tournament ever. One of these being Linda (Liu), who scored 8
points in that game. (not to shabby)
Maryland put up a hard fight, playing really tough D, but Scorned was
able to get a few breaks in the first half, which put us in good position going
into the second half. Scorned wins 13-6.
Our second game vs. Pitt was very intense. They are a very
aggressive team, especially on D. Pitt took half, and Scorned had to calm down
their offense to slow down the fast pace D of the Pitt ladies. Pesch and Cassie
took control on offense making patient and effective decisions and working
together on O. After a couple of big breaks, Scorned was able to put themselves
in a position to take the game. 12-10
After a fun bye of karaoke (rookie-roake) and watching
Seaweed, the Florida game was very fun and spirited. Sam played awesome calm O
during this game, starting off the vert stack with big break throws. The
Scorned offense was able to get some breaks, and work on offensive flow. 12-7
After moving up the hill, Scorned took on North Carolina to
see who would make it to the finals. NC played a really strong structured
offense and had some really strong throwers and downfield defenders. After
coach K made some adjustments to our offense, scorned was able to tackle their
handler poaches, and was able to get some big breaks on the NC Ladies. Thanks
to them for such a spirited game, and for hosting the tournament. Also shout
out to Virginia Hydra, during our half time karaoke of meet Virginia, and to
UNC-W for supporting us during their bye. 14-11
It seemed just like that we had made our way into the
finals, time flies when you are having fun. It was exciting to see Carlton so early in the
season, in the past we haven’t played them until sectionals. It was evident Carlton
has been working hard over the offseason. With a smaller roster than ours,
Syzygy gave us a really tough game, playing hard D, and a strong vertical stack
offense. Brittnee was an offensive
force, scorning about 5 of our points that game, even though she has only been
playing ultimate for like 2 weeks. Linda, and Kelly Shiro were forces to be
reckoned with on D, playing solid positioning
and denying their girl the Frisbee. Sara “Stu” shut down syzygy’s athletic
downfield cutters. Kate had a couple incredible deep D’s where she should have
shouted “not in my house!” Martha also had an awesome D in this game putting us
in a position to score a break. After a hard fought game, with breaks on both
sides, scorned was able to come out with the win, and take the title back home
to our teammates and fans in Ames. 14-13
This weekend was absolutely amazing, I think it was one of
the most fun tournaments I have ever been to. The playing level was high, the
teams were friendly, and scorned proved that we were there to compete. More importantly than the competition was the
bonding that happened among all the scorned ladies. Spring season is better in
every way than the fall, and I think the rookies finally understood why. The
playing level is higher and makes every point scored feel that much better.
Every person on our roster played, and contributed to our win. With such a
small roster, everyone had no choice but to step up and play their hearts
out. The best part is we have more
talented amazing people who did not go to the tournament. We have a big roster
this year, but every player will get their chance to play and contribute, and
that’s what makes our program great.
Scorned ladies, there is a lot of excitement about our past
weekend, we came out and proved that we are a team to beat, but we are no where
close to the team we want to be come regionals. I challenge you to find
something to improve on between now and our next tournament, and hold yourself
accountable. I hope we can funnel that excitement and channel it into commitment
and hard work toward our next tournaments.
Thanks to: Our coaches Lana and Kevin, for everything!
Gapstur for being #1 fan and supportive and helpful on the sideline, Michelle for a great tourney, Cassie’s
parents, Cassie’s neighbor, Gapsturs aunt, Martha’s mom, Everyone who supported
and followed us over the weekend
