The tournament started out to a rocky start, with not being to go to the outlet mall, but other than this trip to Iowa City ended up be fairly uneventful. Bosco sang, friendship bracelets, were made, and some serious spring break planning took place. Really the only excitement took place as the sun went down and Bosco realized that the inside lights on the van didn’t work.(thanks Iowa State) so the last 30 minutes of the trip the speedometer was checked using Jiear’s cell phone.
Once we arrived at Gapstur’s mom’s house we headed to Pizza Ranch to get some dinner. Pizza ranch could arguably be called the worst part of the whole weekend. After returning to Gap’s we watched the 2008 Hodags destroy ISUC at regionals in the movie “The Blueprint”. After having a brief team meeting the team for the most part went to sleep, minus a few people doing homework, and a very very sick Gapstur (food poisoning).
Sunday morning Gapstur’s mom made us a delicious French toast and energy bar breakfast complete with tons of scrumptious blueberries. After Scorned headed out to the bubble, there was a slight mishap with Bosco forgetting her shoes, (how did she forget her shoes? Did she drive the van in cleats? ) So Gap’s car went back to get them. While this was happening the van arrived at the Iowa Rec center, and warmed up in some sort of roller hockey rink, while being circled by people doing laps with heavy backpacks.
The day started out playing against Iowa, nerves were high during the first few points of the game, including a few turns by each team. After Iowa scored the first point, Scorned quickly answered back with a short pass to Cami off the pull, who hucked it to a speedy Annhika for the score. The Iowa game remained fairly close the whole game, but Iowa came out on top after scoring a couple of breaks.
The next game vs. Wisconsin Eau Claire was a fun one! The first point was about 15 minutes long, and for a while I was having flashbacks to the 40 minute long point from Regionals last spring. Per usual when Eau Claire and Scorned get together, this game was a ton of fun!
After Eau Claire, Scorned played Carlton Syzygy. Syzygy proved to be an extremely disciplined and athletic team, putting up a huge challenge for the Scorned ladies. Although a not very close game score wise, Scorned’s own Daisy explained to the team after the game she felt that we won because we played so hard (so cheesy but awesome! ). Scorned rookie Janani had an amazing point during this game with a quick low grab on a missed huck, and then a huge sky in the corner of the endzone!
After the Carlton game, Scorned had a bye. We refueld with some food, rest, new batteries in bosco, and the arrival of Becca and Hoistad, Scorned was ready to take on Wisconsin Bella Donna. Coach K called this game the best game of our whole season thus far. Both teams played hard with deep rosters, and it was a great game all around. During this game, Scorned was amped up our offense and played with the most discipline of the tournament. After a very hard fought game by both sides, Scorned came out on top against Wisconsin.
After the Wisconsin game the older players from scorned were done, but for the 1st and 2nd years, there was one more game. The much anticipated Rookies vs Iowa Rookies game. New players got to try out new positions, while the veterans stood on the sideline and cheered/heckled. After a nail biter the WS rookies once again pulled off a W for the 2nd year in a row!
Although we had a 3-2 record for the tournament, the day was a complete success. Despite our absent players, we proved our depth with every player stepping up their game to perform when needed. Many of the younger handlers were able to take advantage of these games to prove their skill and poise in highly competitive play. With each team in attendance using this opportunity to stretch their legs and get back into “serious-mode” from fall tournaments, it proved to be a great weekend for everyone. If there was one thing to take from this weekend as a region, it was that once again North Central region is going to be stacked with talent and competition!
Key plays from the weekend:
-Bows handling during the rookie game
-Wino Torching someone
-Sam and Kaira dominating as handlers all weekend
-Cami’s huck to Alyssa finally working
-Janani’s sick grab and sky!
-Kate earning tons of rookie points!
