63 Days until Green Green Grass...

With finals behind us and the rest of break with no practice to keep us busy, Magical Liu and I find ourselves already bored on the first actual night of break. A couple of fun, semi-interesting updates about the team include:

-Magon and I have finally gotten our knee/shoulder braces to hopefully prevent further injury
-The team remains pretty much injury-free (knock on wood)
-A venue has officially been booked for the scrimmage party
-The Ross Rd house has officially been named the “LLC
-Finals jerseys and disc are to be ordered soon
-Tournament schedule has been finalized…sort of:

SPRING 2010

  • MARD GRAS XXIII @ BATON ROUGE, LA – FEB. 13/14
  • Bella/SOL Scrimmage @ AMES, IA- FEB 20th
  • MIDWEST THROWDOWN @ ST. LOUIS, MO – MARCH 6/7
  • Philly Invite @ PHILIDELPHIA, PA- MARCH 13/14
  • CENTEX @ AUSTIN, TX – MARCH 27/28
  • FOOL’S FEST @ LAWRENCE, KS - April 3/4
  • COLLEGE SERIES
  • SECTIONALS
  • REGIONALS
  • NATIONALS

We had our first Scorned/ISUC mixer of the season last week. Brought together in the spirit of Christmas, much joy and merriment was had! Even Bunbun and Archie joined in. Jeremy Keiser (ISUC capt.) had his shirt partially consumed by Bunbun, while Archie had a great time showing off his “sit up pretty” trick to everyone willing to pet him. Bad decisions were made all around, and needless to say, we all got to know the ISUC boys a little better.

Continuing with the theme of mixing teams, finals week included a night of mixed pickup. With turf times available, ISUC, Scorned, and CLX joined together to have a little fun with the disc. While Scorned got to experience the Ho-Stack offense, ISUC got so see what it was like to play with national caliber teams (BOOM, Roasted!). However I am pretty sure about 90% of the ladies (and 100% of the guys) now have intense crushes on Mr. Michael Dunlay after seeing his sick lay out D’s.

In true Christmas spirit, the ladies of the Bordello (plus Love) continued the Christmas/finals celebration into this weekend. With a dance party in mind, much of Scorned congregated to say good bye before the long break. Although Love limited my playlist to only 1 Miley song, we still “moved our hips like yeah!” Naturally things got entertaining when I finally (and without the help of Tai) found a permanent marker. Needless to say, no one left without my doctor signature on them. The Bordello putains made it home with some class, and the night was coined epic.

Enjoy your winter break, happy holidays, and see you all in 2010!!!

Sledding Into Spring Season

As we go into the winter months, and snow engulfs our practice fields, we are once again forced inside to battle for turf space at the Lied. Even with the new (and completely unnecessary) additions to the building, that have successfully wasted more of our tuition money, we still feel the longingness to move back outside. This year, ISU is having us share an hour and a half time slot twice a week with our men’s team, ISUC. While this does allow us a little more time to flirt with the boys, it also limits our time on open space to throw, drill, and scrimmage. With this in mind, our amazing coaches have worked out a plan which can only lead to success.

With the famous Dr. Rachel Derscheid infusing our minds with offensive ultimate brilliance, scoring will be a breeze by spring. Inspiration flows thick in these Tuesday practices, while learning from the woman who started it all. Our frightening practices of 8’s have quickly transformed into 15’s with the new times and days.

While Tuesdays prove invigorating, Thursday practices have quickly become a pleasant new form of “Thirsty Thursday.” Melissa “Gibbler” Gibbs may no longer be hammering out scores for scorned on the field, but we have managed to keep her on our sideline to teach us the tenacious defense that can only be expressed from a woman scorned. Although I thought her vacation time after nationals would give me an edge in my personal season goal (to look better than Gibbs by nationals), she stepped on the turf Thursday and I realized I have a long way to go.

If brains and beauty aren’t enough, then Sunday practices are what will carry our team through the finals. Our third coach, Tai “I’m not going to even try to spell her whole name” wo, is pure badass. In fact, my exact quote the first time I met her was “You’re Tai? They have written text books about you!” After a winter of learning Tai’s intensity, field awareness, and cutting strategies, there is no doubt in my mind that Scorned is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

In our last game of the fall, scorned hit a wall and our lack of physical fitness lost us our edge. As Gibbs yelled from the sidelines, “Come on, are you really that tired?!?” Lauren looked at me and gasped, “Yes Gibbs, we are really that tired.” With each practice indoors, we are increasing our intensity and our level of fitness. Whether it is Monday sprints or Wednesday plyos, Scorned is taking every opportunity to shape our bodies into perfect replicas of Melissa Gibbs. Can you imagine, 7 Gibblers on the line?.. Holy shit that would be scary.

With Mardi Gras being our first tournament of the spring, training on all levels is well in store. The return of some old veterans has sparked some excitement on the team, and with some scary-talented rookies, a jacked up team, the number of a really good Louisiana attorney, and the possibility of vans, we will be making the 1044 mile trip to represent for the Central Region.

Other tournaments of the spring include Frost Bite (for our rookies), Midwest Throw Down, Centex, and Fool’s Fest. With new girls showing up at practice each day, Frost Bite should turn out to be a great experience for our younger ladies, and a great time for the elders. Heckling on the sidelines will definitely be in store as the Women take the field, despite snow, wind, or rain. Spring break is looking like a repeat of my summer, with a visit to Texas. I will definitely have to visit the Monkeys in San Anton, before we take to one of the most competitive women’s tournaments in the nation. Centex. My mind is flooding with wonderful memories of Fool’s Fest from 2008 as I look at the list. I can’t wait to see what this year’s festival will have in store! Midwest Throw Down should once again prove to be a small preview of the Central Regional tournament. I’m counting on Hoistad to pull the disc further than Gibbs’s 200+ yarder from last year.

While most of our ladies direct their fury this next week towards their finals, my studying will most likely involve excited planning. With the help of Stine (who is just as eager about this as I am), I am continuing to plan the (first annual?) winter scrimmage between Scorned, Sol, and the Bellas. The ultimate is bound to be enough to rock our socks off, but some additional excitement is in store. With new ideas every day, the party to match this ridiculous scrimmage is in store. Jazz’s and Georgia’s silent threats have Robyn practicing her disc racing diligently, while I am stealing karaoke machines from 6 year olds and Magical Liu is renting PA systems. Given 3 months to plan, absolutely nothing else to do, and three sick teams involved, you can only expect a legendary event. The moral of this story kids, don’t take all of your hard classes your first two years.

Clearly I have written entirely too long of a blog here, so I will end on an exciting new update. Things are looking very promising on the Woman Scorned disc frontier. At the previous exec meeting, disc ideas were voted on and a template will soon be sent in for quote! Woman Scorned has never made discs before, so you should all be sure to buy one (or like ten) of these before they’re gone! Finals jersey (which we won thanks to Britt at NO WISC) designs were decided on as well. A yellow jersey with the ORIGINAL WS logo on the back and number and flame on the front. When we put those jerseys on, it will be a representation of past to present, beginning to now. All who have come before us, to make our team what it is today. Victory will be the least of what we are playing for.

Enjoy the snow!

Chelle's Birthday Extravaganza!

I know that this is a little delayed, but this is for Chelle's birthday! Michelle "Velociraptor" Johnson, one of our AMAZING captains, was born on November 16th, 1987 with 2 foot long legs. As Chelle was growing up, she had little to no idea that her future destiny would be as a leader of a crazy frisbee team called Woman Scorned. In fact, Chelle is so nice, you'd never guess she would possess the fury of a woman scorned!

Chelle prides herself on her wardrobe and amazing ability to trick people into thinking its actually 1996! If turquoise is your favorite color, then you have met your soul mate! Chelle rocks purple and turquoise on the field regularly... and looks mighty fine out there, snatching discs out of the air far above our heads. While her field gear is pretty much awesome, my favorite part of her style is shown on the sidelines. The infamous "Social Distortion" Jacket! Although I don't remember the exact way this story goes, it's basically that Chelle woke up one morning and this magnificent treasure had found its way to her. Because Chelle is wonderful, she gave this lost little jacket a home! (As I write this, I can't help but think about the story of how Gibbs came to live there too.)

Some of Chelle's hobbies include:
Tree Climbing
Hugging
Purring
Laughing
Ultimate-of course!
and being a Bio-chemist Genious!

So, in celebration of Chelle's 22nd birthday, the team (or at least a bunch of us) headed to FUJI to dine in style! While the food was being prepared in front of us, we laughed at our awesome chef's jokes. He even threw egg at us to see who's mouth-eye coordination was the best. We scarfed down way too much and sat around for the next couple hours joking and picking food out of our teeth!

Overall, it was a wonderful evening, and we had a great time celebrating Chelle's birthday! AND, no ambulances were called, or old ladies bleeding!

Ps. As you can see, I figured out how to link photos to words or phrases. So I got a little excited and may have went over board. Enjoy!

Right Hand Red, Left Foot Blue. Scorned is number one, and I'm Robyn's speed dial #2

Every team has their specialty. Some are good on defense, some are good at lookin' good. Scorned specializes in havin' a good time-on and off the field (course we look really good while we're doing it, too)!

A team building party occurred this Saturday, which involved some good 'ol fashion fun, several apple products, a bunch of candy, and plenty of whip cream! The night began with a simple game of categories. We were able to hear everyone's favorite Ultimate stories and Lauren's first DISC story! Due to Stine's "No Swearing" rule, we learned how dirty our mouths are (especially L-Dawg, who might actually have a moderate case of Turrets).

About 40 cards in and on box #2, we decided that it was time for the Disc game! Although no one knew what exactly was in store for this game, I am going to believe that everyone was at least half as psyched for this as I was.

Rookies up first! Here are the rules:
-Each has their own disc
-fill the disc with one of each-Oreo, Gummy bear, Gummy worm, Skittle, Hot Tammaly, and a mint
-each piece of candy stands for a dare/task that they must complete
-Cover the candy in the disc with a huge mound of whip cream!
-get on your knees, dig your face in, and you have until the stall count of 10 to pull out two candies of your choice
-BTW, the small the candy, the less intense the dare, but the harder to find!

Alright, so Rooks first. Becca and Lady Pesch. Although a little reluctant, they were great sports and dug right in! See for yourself:

I think my favorite part of this video is L-Dawg yelling "Oh no! She got the Oreo!" haha The Oreo transferred over to drinking a disc of liquid. In this case, apple cider and water- yummy! I can see that it looks a lot like beer, but it really was apple cider mixed with water, lol.
After a few more dares for the candy they pulled out, it was time for our Sophomores:

These girls were not as enthusiastic (I think they are starting to catch on to our ridiculous shenanigans) but they enjoyed shoving their faces in, none-the-less.

Some highlights of their dares include eating a spoon of butter, my personal fav: chugging apple sauce from a tube-which Mag showed Britt up in, pretty hard core, and a couple embarrassing stories.
Time for the Juniors.

We were gettin' a little low on whip cream, so I we had to substitute some apple sauce and peach yogurt in Dre's disc. All was good though, because Dre had her mind set on making the two laps of pride around the house-she even wore a robe to the party!
Amongst the many other sides of Dre we saw, we learned that her trust in Gibbs is wavering. haha Apparently the rookies are more trust worthy with your clothes than good 'ol Gibbler. I think I'd trust Gibbs over Pesch though. Especially after the things we had Pesch do this weekend :)

Stine and Hoistad were both put up to some decently awkward truths in a little bit of truth or dare, but eventually ended up downing some shots of apple juice. Don't worry though, they used protection!

Oh ya, and L-Dawg joined in just because shes such a big fan...of the apple juice.

Time for the seniors (aka "group BA"). Buuuuuuttttt, we ran out of whip cream, whoops! So it was time for Twister! Now Chelle is so tall that she just kind of hovers over everyone. Plus Brit has some redic dance move flexibility, so I didn't put a lot of faith in my twister skills, but I thought I'd give it a try and at least show up L-Dawg. With Fowler's witty banter and cheating spin moves, I ended up bein the first to fall, but I was smart about it and took out Becca with me (I also strongly suspect that Brit went down, but I haven't been able to prove this yet).

After the Twister workout, it was movie time. We all drooled over Gerard Butler as we watched the movie "The Ugly Truth." It was a good way to end the night, as both Lauren and I passed out while lying in the middle of the floor.

I woke up enough to stumble down the stairs to bed-in vain. Not even 20 minutes into the blissful sleep, I was awoken by a ridiculous phone call in which I learned the following interesting facts:

-Eau Claire wants to make a super team with Scorned
-Eau Claire has promised to make Scorned breakfast made from stolen goods if we come to visit
-I am speed dial #2 on Robyn's phone (in replacement of her mother)
-Robyn agrees with me on the fact that I am a better trumpet player than Jazz (bahahahah, love you J)
-Brit (from Eau Claire, not State) will never refer to Scorned as "Iowa" again

Overall, it was a great team building night, and I'm lookin' forward to the next one!

Peace,

Gap

Happy, Happy Birthday, From Hickory Park to Daisy!

Although it was not her actual day of birth, we celebrated Daisy's birthday tonight at good 'ol Hickory Park! It was a splendid time, and we not only got the pleasure of eating a meal together, but we had two new recruits! YEY! Daisy is a whopping 20 years old (which of course means she has another year until we will allow her to consume any alcohol), which is very exciting. I remember when I turned 20...well kinda-it was a crazy time! I thought, since this is Daisy's day, I would let you all know a little more about her.

Daisy fights Jiear to claim "Happiest Woman to be Scorned." She makes up awesome cheers at nationals to random R&B songs with my name in them, and is going to be the most awesome little kids teacher some day! She describes herself as "My name is Daisy and I'm the bomb, you mess with me... I'll tell your mom. I like to sing camp songs and play games." As you can see, she's a keeper.

Dinner was great. Love split cheese balls with me and we all got to hear recaps of CLX at nationals. Rediculous stories we retold, spring break plans were discussed, and plan to head north for a weekend was created. Near the end, several waitresses came over and sang the happy birthday song to Daisy and several of us enjoyed ice cream!

I had to dip out a lil early to work on a team project before hitting up the gym. (Prepare yourself for a crazy story here)

I walked out of HP and saw a couple people kind of standing around looking frantic with someone lying on the ground. Another person yelled get help as one of them ran by. I jogged over to see if I could help and I saw an elderly lady lying on the cement bleeding pretty heavily from her head. The people around her didn't really know what to do, so I used a clean hankerchief and applied pressure to the large gash in her head, while propping her on her back with her head slightly above her heart to slow bleeding. In minutes the ambulance came, but the bleeding had mostly stopped. They kinda took over and I walked away. Moral of this story: knowing simple triage for wild animals CAN apply to humans. Crazy, Crazy people were just standing there letting her bleed from the head because they didn't wanna touch her blood. Anyways, send one up for the old lady who tripped at HP-hope she's doin alright!

Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAISY!!

Midwest Warm Up

With a fury of excitement, Scorned left Ames at a record breaking 5:00 PM-ish. The unbeatable combination of crashing at the Minner house hold and playing some sweet ultimate in beautiful weather made the early departure possible.

Saturday, Round 1:

Waking up to the soft buzz of activity, we knew the day was going to be great. Wait...that isn't quite how it happened.

Waking up to Magon's annoying phone
making music to get us all up, we knew the day would be pretty good. After some delicious breakfast, fighting over the bathrooms, and frantic searching for directions, the day was on!
First game of the day was against the wonderful ladies from Harding. Scorned came out strong and looked mighty fine throwing beautiful hucks despite the gusty wind. Harding played a great game that was enjoyable for both teams, and it was a wonderful way to start the tournament.

Final Score: 13-1 Woman Scorned

Round 2:

In round two, Scorned was matched agains North Park. The sun was warming up, the wind was picking up, and Scorned was heating up! L-Dawg (Lauren Theile) made the excuative decision to dedicate her life to cutting; and cutting she did! Handles switched out between Jazz, Hoistad, Gap, Magon, and Jiear, while cutters ensured the high point differential win. North Park played an enthusiastic game making the round even more fun.

Final Score: 13-1 Woman Scorned

Round 3:

With a little bit of Nationals revenge in our hearts, we matched up against SLU. With the first point, Scorned came out to play. J-Rick cut fiercely to advance the up wind points, while Stine jumped over opponents to catch swilly throws down wind. Daisy had an amazing snag in the endzone to throw another point on the board. With spirits as high as Jiear's voice yelling on the side lines, Scorned got the revenge they were craving. SLU played a great game, giving WS the toughest competition of the day.

Final Score: 13-3 Woman Scorned

Round 4:

In our last round of the day, we were matched up again Nationals '09 team, Illinois. Knowing IL would be looking to score at any weakness of our own, we fought hard to keep the game a shut out. With ridiculously high grabs from Chelle and J-Rick the game advanced without scores from IL. Solid performances throughout the team allowed the score to advance to 12-0.
With high hopes of a shut out, Stine requires the handlers to end on a hammer... IL scores on an inside out break to the force side, 12-1. IL pulls, WS handlers work it down field 30 yards. Swing to Hoistad. Stine runs deep. Disc goes up. Stine sees nothing but the sun with her arms out stretched. Caught-hammer thrown 40+ yards to land perfectly in Stine's out stretched arms. ...Redemption.

Final Score: 13-1 Woman Scorned

After group
showers with the Bettys in the WU rec center, food was ENJOYED at Chipotle. Shortly afterward, bad decisions were made, and our fearless leader led us to near death at Church's Chicken-BAD DECISION!

Shortly following, a strong 4 of us rallied to several St. Louis bar scenes to enjoy the night with some much missed TSU ladies. While hearing about Jazz's bad decisions, telling a few of my own, and waiting for Wirkus and Julie to spill, I learned that Morgan has successfully made it through life without making a bad decision. ENVY! As Robyn stood us up, Fran watched Little Giants, Jazz & Stine passed out on the car ride home, and Megh and I had bonding moments as I cured myself of pink eye.

Sunday Quater Finals:
Waking up, we enjoyed the first round bye (due to our 1st seed-booya) while shoving our mouths with Megh's pancakes and greek yogurt. After applying our W-Witch tattoos to various parts of our bodies, we hit the road.

We arrived at the fields in time to see Saucey cleaning up their first game to advance to quarters for our next game. Coming out strong, Scorned had some pride to reclaim. As Gap got beat in again and again by Patch, Annika and the cutting crew destroyed the Iowa defense. With Jiear "the D machine" Vang causing turns left and right, Scorned pushed the game and let the fury of revenge (from Elephantitis) flow. Despite the sick puts from Greenwood and the Saucy-style unstopable strike cuts and fast breaks, WS was able to come out victorious. Semis were ahead with the one-and-only, SOL.

Final Score: 14-4 Woman Scorned

Semi-Finals:

As Eau Claire approached the field, the song was quickly changed to "Party in the USA," and everyone knew it was time to get our game faces on. Dancing it out, Scorned formed a huddle to watch Magon Lui's amazing Koooool-aid face. Game on.

Eau Claire came out with the strength of many UV rays to score the first two points of the game-> sick grab by Martha (who decided to stop faking injury and school us). While Stine and Gap talked a lot of trash from the side lines and field, Scorned had to fight hard to regain control of the game. Stine, still feeling the previous night's liquid courage, went up against Robyn for several sky-high discs. Trash talk ended quickly. After some rethinking and hard work by scorned, the tables turned.

The zone offense was able to break the through the SOl-zone (ozone reference?...needs some work) with the brilliant popping of L-dawg, Stine, Jessy, Jiear, Annihka, and Daisy, while Chelle, Becca, and Brit posed a serious threat in the endzone. As the game advanced, some Taylor Swift was played and "You Belong With Me" saved the day, lifting the spirits of all within sound range! As Gap, Lauren, and Hoistad pretened they were Taylor Swift, Becca D'd some discs and the rest of the team watched in envy. With both team neck n' neck, Scorned pulls out their big guns and pulls a couple more points out. With hard cap on, Scorned pulls to Eau Claire. Like a huge ball of fire, SOL burns down field to take the last point. Although Scorned takes the game, we felt the heat of SOL and know we have not see the last of them.

Game ends, but Robyn's banter is still heard from the sideline picknic table, and SOL tempts WS with Hooter's chicken wings...yum!

Final Score: 9-8 Woman Scorned

Finals:

As we claimed Semis (and lock in our Chipotle burrito prize) we hurried to the sideline to watch Bella take semis on universe point against S
LU Alum. With spirits high, we prepared to fight for the championship. Although the Bella ladies were looking fine, Scorned came out lookin' finer. As Bella worked their magic, Magical Liu combated their spells with flawless (please do not reference twitter here) throws to start the game off 3-0, WS. Bella called a time out (and shot up on roids or Redbulls). After time out, Bella picked it up. With sick puts by Georgia and remarkable grabs by Bitterman and Francis, Bella came back on WS with a strong force. Jazz had sick puts, unbeatable endzone D's and untouchable grabs to pull her team back together. As Gibbs flexed her muscles at us from the sidelines, Scorned gained more strength to fight for each point. Jazz cramped on the field, but was saved by Robyn's banana rescue. Unfortunately, Stine met the same demise but the banana had already been spent on Jazz-Stine down. As the weekend takes its toll, Wisconsin proves better fit, and takes the victory home. Burnt and tired, Scorned takes defeat with promise to return with the fury of a woman scorned, come spring. Another great game against Bella with hope for some Mid-winter fun.

Final Score: 7-15 Bella

Although SOL weaned out with some redic story of a gas station, Beth's car, and some spandex admirers, I think we will still take that rain check and show you how parties are won. January it is. With so many Central Region teams looking stellar at Warm Up, I can't help but get butterflies thinking about Regionals 2010. I also wonder where Carleton is and how they will bring it in the spring. As we jet from St. Louis, lots of laughs were generated from all cars alike. I learned so much about Annihka that makes me love her more. Not to mention the fact that she peed on the road outside the porn shop off of I-80. What a great weekend!
