Winter Scrimmage Recap

After entirely too much planning for such a simple event, the day finally arrived. At some point earlier this season, someone said to me, "Hey, we should have a scrimmage with some Central Region teams this winter." It seemed like a great idea, and since SOL and Bella Donna have been the vast majority of our losses this fall and thus our greatest competition (plus I think it might have been Robyn's idea), it only made sense to hit up some Wisconsin teams to see if they would be interested. Both teams' captains hopped right on board and showed excitement to have a little bit of competition in the winter, and so I took up the duty to plan the scrimmage!

Although we wish we could have had more teams come, we were pretty limited by turf availability. As the SOL ladies walked into the Lied Rec, their eyes were popping out of their heads in amazement-what we complain about being too small and inadequate, seemed like a small part of heaven in comparison to their small gym they practice in. As the cars rolled in, so did the ladies of Woman Scorned. After a quick warm up, we took the field and commenced game 1 vs. SOL.

To start the game off right, SOL decided it would be funny to flip for colors only because they wanted to ruin my carefully planned outfit and make me monochromatic in red. Keeping a wide rotation to maximize playing time and prevent injuries, Scorned worked its offense and traded points with SOL. There was plenty of trash talk and jokes made, while both teams struggled a bit to awake from hibernation. Tracie Anderson had some sick grabs and I hope that I will never be playing D on her when a disc goes up deep. Robyn didn't let the turf stop her from laying out so she could get the D and punt it to the end zone, and Anna Hettler worked the disc well, breaking me several times and making me trip over my feet. Scorned had some great plays and really worked our offense, but SOL pulled into the lead after half, and although we didn't really keep score, SOL took the scrimmage.

Game 2 meant a bye for WS, and a chance to grab food or watch the SOL vs. Bella game. I was waaay too lazy to attempt to leave, so I decided to stay, watch, heckle from the sideline, throw a disc around, and catch up with some old friends. I have no idea who won this game and I don't think the score was even kept, but both teams were looking good and it made me a little nervous about Regionals.

Game 3 meant WS vs. Bella Donna. Scorned came out a little more ready to play in this second game, and after a few points (and with the help of Dersch) we were able to figure out their offense a little better and try to adjust to utilize our poaches. Lauren and I stood on the sidelines with speculation and finally came to the conclusion that they were running the "undefendable Star Stack Offense." With tough D on both teams and big throws as well, the battle raged. There were some awesome D's from our younger ladies and our offensive flow began to look a little more natural and efficient. Magical Liu faked an injury in the end zone because she got skied by Georgia Bosscher and was too embarrassed to admit to it. As she writhed on the ground, Mikey Lun speculated that "this could very well be a season-ending calf cramp injury." Like our previous game, the game was fought hard, but Bella came out stronger.

With plenty of extra turf time to spare, the captains of all three teams decided to split up teams into 2 groups and play a sort of mixed teams scrimmage. Team Sex Panther (black) versus team Raptors (white and red), proved to be a quite fun, and allowed some time for the injured folks to head upstairs to pump some iron. With the majority of our turf time used up, we called the game and everyone went to hit the showers before heading to dinner.

Dinner was done on a team basis before the party and each team then split up and headed to their host houses. Hearing everyone call Chelle's house "The Grandma Crib" cracked me up everytime. With houses split up so each had ladies from both teams, mingle time was instore. While Bella finished up dinner at Legends, my SOLmates helped me do some party prep. Robyn and I popped some bubbly in celebration of recent life achievements, and each house got to know their temporary roomies.

Since the service at Legends was a little slower than Culver's (which Sol hit up), over lap time was little to none before the party. As my Sol ladies (plus Pat) headed to the party, Bella came rolling in. A little digestion time was required before we headed out (and I had just downed a Jimmy John's #12-no sprouts), and in the mean time we enjoyed some fruity concoctions that I mixed up from random stuff found in our kitchen. Muffin drank his out of a goblet which he acquired from dinner (which he then forgot at our house-pretty excited about that, not gunna lie). After Bun Bun and Archie received more love than they have gotten in months, we headed out.

With party time in full swing, everyone was looking pretty lively. Our own Jasmine Draper played "Super host," giving out back rubs, ten dollar bills, and umm love dedications? to the ladies of SOL and BD. All the while she abused her own team, leaving all Scorned ladies with bruises and beverage soaked clothes. Bella Donna cleaned up in BP, while SOL won the (unofficial, definitely not UBRPA sanctioned-Ultimate Boat Racing Players Assoc.) boat race. To be fair here, we hardly even had our B team out, we were plagued with Jazz, and Martha was standing in on the WS side. Still undefeated, still national champs-no worries.

Dancing got serious as several of our ISUC guys DJ'ed it up in the corner. As magic floated through the air, a circle formed and ladies stepped in to the middle to give a little preview of what each plans to bring to Centex Dance-Off. After some time, Julie (now a BD but formerly a fellow Iowa Stater) suggested a trip to Welch to further some of the ladies' Ames experiene. After a cold walk, some pool playing, and a bit more Saturday night fun, groups headed homeward to their respective houses. While cowboy boots seemed like a good idea at the beginning of the night, they proved to be a slippery, bad decision in the snow and ice. Saved by Lady Pesch and Chuck, myself and several ladies staying at the LLC were picked up and escorted the remaining distance safely.

From all angles of this scrimmage (besides the actual scrimmage) the score board ended looking like this:

Party winners:
1st-Jasmine Draper (I don't think anyone would disagree)
2nd- Robyn Fennig (As far as I know, she partied the latest)
3rd- Jenny Gaynor (she handled the potion that ended me)

BP winners:
Frances and McKain

Flip cup winners:
umm I was gone, but I hear L-Dawg & Alex cleaned up? Butcher, Keiser, Bris, and some BD ladies, but definitely not Joe.

Wrongfully but definitely justified creeper award:
Joe Brisbois

Dance party winner:
Anna Hettler

Overall, the scrimmage was a great success.
All teams involved we able to work on vital aspects of the game, and everyone (except my phone) had a great time. HUGE thanks to the ladies from Bella and SOL for attending and making the weekend awesome. We can't wait to see both teams again soon at some spring tourneys!

Mardi Gras "oh ten"

Even with all of the count downs and preparation emails to psych us up for this tournament, none of us could control what the anticipation of our first spring tournament would bring. In true Mardi Gras tradition, Lauren and Chuck were put in charge of playing cupid to mix up the Iowa State Men's and Women's teams into groups for the 18 hour car ride. This car ride has been the root of many epic Iowa State frisbee stories back, even back in the dark ages, and it always proves to the perfect chance to really get to know each other.

With the first wave of Stater-ultimaters leaving Thursday at 4 PM and the second at 9 PM, we were off (plus a car full headed down on Friday to make it just in time for games)! Due to growing teams and lacking team vehicles, the cars were FULL-not just a little full, but I mean really full, cuddle with your neighbor full. The drive from Ames to St. Louis was rather uneventful, although a little snowy for those leaving at 9 PM. All was made right when everyone arrived at Butcher's house in St. Louis and his parents made us a delicious breakfast. Shortly after, around 5 AM, we headed out with all of the Thursday cars together. With gas/bathroom breaks along the way, shenanigans obviously occurred. In my memory they all blur together and what happened where is completely smudged, but there were frisbees thrown in parking lots-hitting innocently parked cars, dance parties seemed to congregate around Olk's car- due to the sub woofers he was packing, and Red Bull actually doubled its total sales from 2009 just from our teams' consumption.

Despite a "horrible snow storm" in Mississippi, we made it safely to New Orleans, just in time to eat some for Jazz's favorite Popeye's Chicken before the parade. The parade was pretty sweet, and it is safe to say that everyone got plenty of beads and might have learned that meaning of "Who Dat?". With our buddies in arm, many of us headed off to Bourbon Street to try to collect a few more beads.

Bourbon Street was quite eventful:
-Lauren got intimate with the protesters, which earned her a new nickname and a new on field chant
-We ran into some Saucy Nancy and Tsunami ladies, hustling for beads
- We lost Butcher and Olk

After freezing our butts off in New Orleans, we hopped in the cars to head back to the hotels in Baton Rouge to get some sleep before the next day's tournament.

Day one started off with Woman Scorned's theft of a majority of the cars-leaving ISUC packed like 7 to a vehicle. As we walked on to the fields (back in black) we knew that this weekend was going to be a great one. There was standing water EVERYWHERE! A warm up jog, some plyos, and some fist pumping brought us quickly into our first game.

Game 1: Scorned vs. Truman State "TSUnami"

Coming off the line, extremely excited and pumped, we started the game off well against some old friends... TSU 1-0. After some recooperation and concentration (their dang bright colored skirts are just so awesome its hard not to look at them), we got our grips and even things out with a D by Mag, score from J-Rick. We traded points a few more times with our scores by Mag, Pesch, and Hoistad. This game could be summarized by us stretching our legs and makin D's. D list: Cassie, Hoistad, MAg, Ashley (rookie!), Jessy (poach D), Tasha, Britt, Lauren, & Jiear.

Final Score: 13-6 WS

Game 2: Scorned vs. Notre Dame

Coming off of our first spring win, we headed straight into our second game, quickly going up 2-0. The first point included some excitement with a D from Lauren, followed by a sick bid by Jazz, leaving her with a HUGE mouth full o' muddy end zone water and an RTO in the stat book. Point 4 for us, was earned
through an awesome huck from Magical Liu to Love in the end zone, but sadly Magic momentarily loses her powers after a sweet D in the next point and gets skied high by Notre Dame. Point 5 is stuck in our minds forever with a huge collision that included ND's booty shorts girl gettin some mud in places that it should not be. 5-2 WS. Point 6 included an explosion from Jazz (which has "in her pants" after in the stat book) after she sends one to Mag for the score. We got to run our zone-0 around point 7 & 8, but that ended far too soon for our liking. Notre Dame continues to fight hard as both teams get down in the mud. Point 8 "they pull, bitches be DIRTY,...Jazz Layout D, Jazz negates her D with a TTO, they score" 8-8. After several more points (in which the notebook is temporarily lost), Scorned pulls it back together finishing the game. Final Score: 13-10 WS

Game 3: WS vs. Rice

With the wind picking up, and some scary forehand Rice handlers, scorned starts off forcing backhand. Point one actually officially went to me in the note book "Gap plays Party in the USA...again. Us 0, them 0, Gap 1". We go up 2-0 quickly with a 2nd attempt score by Pesch and a sweet D by Chelle. There is some sideline love as Magic pumps up Banana with a candy popper. Rice scores twice, but WS comes back hard to advance the score to 7-3, taking half with YET ANOTHER Jazz D and Mag to Chelle score. Opening point of second half is exciting- "Jazzy layout D, turn a bunch, Jazz to Tasha SICK Layout to score (cross out "to score") nevermind... RTO :(, they turn, Wastey to Annihka 8-3". All you need to know for the rest of the game is that Lauren jacks the rookies up on Red Bull, Jazz drinks Red Bull, gains wings, gets more D's, and Love has a sick hand block. Woman scorned takes the victory.

Final Score 13-5

Game 4: WS vs. Indiana

Although the game started off to a slow start with 2-2, Scorned pulls it back together to only allow one more score by Indiana. This thing that the Louisiana locals call "Sun" was beating down hard by this point and many WS ladies had fury-filled burnt faces. The day ended on another D-filled game with pretty much everyone getting some disc D in their hands. Pretty excited to shower, we headed back to the hotel.

Final Score: 13-3 WS

After turning the showers black, we headed out in groups to a variety of restaurants. Some margs were in store for the elders and the youngsters enjoyed some Italian food at its best: Olive Garden. After returning from the restaurant, many of the ladies started some socialization with the boys and after it was all said and done, only Jazz and I were left to attend the tournament party. The Truman state ladies were more than nice enough to pick us up and escort us there to enjoy some music, dancing, and boat racing. After catching up with some old friends and proving our BR's team as national champions, we headed back to the hotel for a few short hours of R & R.

Day 2- Singles Awareness day, Jessy Erickson's Bday, Valentine's day

Game 5: Scorned vs. Missouri State "Barely L
egal"

Starting off the day on a much stronger note, Scorned goes up by 5 right away. These points are characterized by a catch in the end zone by lady Pesch as she sits down and the disc is called down, Cassie jacks a girl in the nose with her elbow (may have broke it), Lauren gets a sky D, Cassie with a ferocious D, "Chelle wears an invisible cloak and runs deep", and Ashley tries to stall a girl out at stall count 7-she was very confused :). haha Things start to get exciting as Scorned goes on a strong run, stopping their offense at their second score. Jazz starts handing out sprints for random things from the sideline, and everyone gets a little scared. Tasha gets a point for "best cheer writer" and makes up a sick-ass cheer to party in the USA.

Final Score: 13-2 WS

Quarter-Finals: Scorned vs. TSUnami

Since we couldn't get our fill the first day, TSU comes over to play us again. After schooling them in boat racing the night before, they were pretty intimidated. A bunch of stuff happens (someone else takes the notebook and spells Chelle's na
me Shelly) and we go up 7-2 at half. Jiear gets a point for "sideline enthusiast" and raps a beat with everyone's name in it. Michelle Ng hits up our sideline, threatens to ruin us if we continue to wear skirts, offers to rig Midwest Throw down if we promise to wear shorts, and tries to push her influence over Jazz on the subject. Julie and I make a vow to only wear skirts for all of Michelle's tournaments and to make her a Woman Scorned skirt. We may no longer be playing in half of our tourneys this spring ladies, but WE HAVE OUR DIGNITY! :) Jazz single-handidly ruins Valentine's Day with her cheer-"What's the longest river in the ocean? How do you keep the cows in the fence?" ...Chaos. We score upwind, Jiear time has an amazing layout D in the end zone, Scorned finds their groove. TSU, we love you!

Final Score: 13-2

Semi-Finals Game: Scorned vs. Vanderbilt

This wind picks up as the ladies from Nashville head over to share our bleachers with us. The music is pumping and we quickly learn that these ladies are tight as shit! Vande starts the game out well and goes up by 1. Scorned struggles a little as Jazz calls a vet line to pump things up. Scorned goes up 4-3. After getting back into the groove (probs bc I started to play music between every point) we only allow 2 more
on us to take the win. Jazz has a hand block, Magical Liu grows wings to sky, J-rick has a sick layout score, a double D from the captains, Daisy with a sweet D, everyone storms the field on a score from LP to Daisy, Tasha and Ashley get a few more D's, and that's the game in a nutshell. Scorned chats it up with Vande and then both teams join into a dance party to "Chicken Fried."

Final Score: 13-5 WS

Finals: Scorned vs Iowa- "The game for all the marbles"

Excited that the Central Region has awesome representation in the finals, but still feeling a little pain from the seasons first loss against Saucy, Scorned takes the field with the flip. After a little trash talk, some thoughts on boat racing, and jokes about playing the finals game out back home in the snow, game is on! Both teams come out strong to the song Sandstorm. Hoistad gets a D, but L-Dawg gets a sweeter D with the back of her neck, we score. Jazz is Ding every thing, everywhere. We score a couple more times. Despite Sarah P's D and J-ricks hand block, Iowa scores the next 2 points. Both teams trade points a few times, Magical Liu flies through the air into the end zone for a score and pees herself a little it was so cool. Hoistad with a handy block, Tasha announces that there is wind (suddenly the world makes a little more sense), Jiear cleans up for Jazz-"They pull, Jazz TTO, Jiear D, Jazz TTO, Jiear D, Hoistad to Chelle for score." Chelle gets a handy block, both teams try zoning, Scorned learns to shut down the Saucy dish pass, Magic has yet another layout score, and finally Jessy to Love for the win. Saucy Nancy played a great game, fun time like always!

Final Score: 13-8 WS

After dancing out the first tournament win of our season, Scorned packs up and heads out to catch the boys up north at Burger King. Cars are readjusted and we all endure a stinky 20 hour car ride home through horrific weather. At one point we were all sure that Becca and Hoistad's car was lost forever, but they defeated all odds and made up the 50 mile deficit by not peeing to catch up with us in Iowa. Smelly and tired, we made it back to Ames safely and are pumped to continue our spring season!

Special thanks to Tasha's mom for coming to support us, and congrats to ISUC for placing 3rd!

-Gap, with the help of stats from Becca and Ana

ISU Daily: Spirit of the game

Check out pg 8 & 9 of today's ISU Daily written after an interview with your lovely captains (+ Bris):

CLUB SPORTS: Spirit of the game

:)

Follow us at Mardi Gras!

We're going down to Baton Rouge for the weekend, some people are leaving at 4pm, some at 9pm, and some at 2pm tomorrow, but we are all ready for some fun in the sun and sliding in some mud rather than in some snow. Like usual, we're traveling with the guys, which will prove to be especially fun this year as we've lost a surprising number of available cars to take on tournaments and are driving 5s. The ride home (without showers) will possibly prove to be less fun...

Woman Scorned is super excited to test out our offense on a full-size field with real endzones and stretch out our leg muscles deep, and make some sweet cuts digging into the grass. As the first seed going into the tournament, we're going to have our work cut out for us!

Follow us this weekend!

The More Superior Pesch Child

As winter progresses, more and more ladies on WS seem to be celebrating birthdays. As much as I love celebrating b-days, the blogging about them has got me a little behind. Since this clearly takes precedence over my school work and event the class I am skipping right now (it's Geology 101-NBD), I will take the time to tell you about the tallest rookie we have ever had.

Her name is ....Sarah? yeah I think it's Sarah, but more importantly she is Ryan Pesch's little sister. Don't be fooled by the term "little." She is taller, cooler, and much more left handed than Pesch, and thus we have dubbed her so creatively, "Lady Pesch."

Now although Lady Pesch has played for a semester, my experience in car rides with her is limited, so I don't have a great scoop on the real dirt. One thing I do know, is that this girl is tall and left handed. That only means one thing to me-be careful while marking her and don't get too close. I have been knocked to the ground in prac from her tretcherous left backhand huck. She took me to the ground in one swift punch to the face.

Now Lady Pesch is more than just a left handed tall person I'm sure, but let's be honest- what more do you really need? A good personality and dedication to the team are two things that LP has above the rest. From the beginning she has been totally dedicated, working hard to be the best asset to the team possible. She even started dating Chuck (the tallest guy on ISUC) to get a few pointers on being a tall ultimate player. Don't worry Lady Pesch, we all still know your real love is Becca. Chuck is just for the ultimate skills.

Lady Pesch has a great sense of humor, loves to throw the disc, really learns fast, and there is no doubt in our minds that she is going to be a great ultimate player one day very very soon. We are actually all a little scared at how good the rookies are, I think. Good thing we are all graduating bc that WS B-team talk might just have the old A-line on its roster!

LP's Facebook interests say that she enjoys "eating, sleeping, and eating"-must be how she got so tall. Her about me informs us of this, "am... funny, tall, outgoing, adventurous, a really bad speller, um..., perfect, modest, incredibly contradictory, related to Ryan, best friends with Rebecca, it takes a lot to keep me entertained, smart and dumb, hair that likes to try for world domination all by itself, horrible hand eye coordination, but yet can now catch a frisbee ~50% of the time unless Rebecca is throwing... then a little less, I cannot run in a straight line to save my life, I hate walking slow, I hate rain unless I am already soaked, hate most foods, love sugar, Obnoxious, Awkward, and Fun..."

I take it back, you and Chuck are perfect. Notice that this is a run-on sentence-and it kept going for at least that much longer, I just didn't put it in here.

On a little more serious note, we are so happy that Lady Pesch joined the team. We were worried about the loss of heigth when Gibbs graduated, but Pesch came in with a screaming several inches on her and so for that we are thankful. LP is a great addition to our team and we are very excited to see her start skying opponents this spring.

Happy birthday Baby Pesch. We are glad you are taller than Ryan.

Twenty-Three Turns Twenty-Four

If you have played against or watched Woman Scorned in the past five years, then you are sure to know #23. It is a number that we all have burned into our brains from watching her bust deeper than us and beat us in sprints. 23 is held by the woman who has held our team together on the field and never failed to step up to the plate and crank one when we need her (is it wrong to use a baseball metaphor in ultimate?).

Some say she is all legs and flowing brown hair. Lauren and I once speculated that she will be the MILF one day, that causes all the husbands of her friends and fathers of her children's friends want to commit adultery. It has been stated that she is the fastest person on earth-and I'm 96% sure that is true. She can sky with the best, and no one has a chance running deep when she is last back. Every guy wants her and every girl wants to be her.

She is....Melissa Gibbs, and she just celebrated her 24th birthday!

...but mostly we just know her as Gibbs, Gibbler, Gibbles, MJG, and now Coach Gibbs. We don't call her Melissa. Ever. She is our awesome defense coach this year! The majority of us on WS have played with Gibbs, so when we heard she was going to stick around a coach for a season, we were delighted! We definitely knew that letting her go was going to be hard for our team, but having this last season to learn more from her is proving to be perfect!

This lady has been an awesome addition to the ultimate community since day 1. She has really gotten around, having played for all sorts of teams-POP, CLX, Small Rackages... But she has always held true to one team, Woman Scorned!

My first memories of frisbee include The Gibbler. At my first tournament, we got stuck in a car for about 5 hours longer than intended and she made me feel right at home while we sat in the front seat, island hopping, looking for our beach house, and talking about boys. That spring break brought on great memories of dance parties on the deck, an epic game of strip ping pong to set the week's theme, volley ball in the yard, and of course, some great games of b. pong.

In fact, there was one intense game of pong that sticks out well in my mind. It was Meghan Minner + Me vs. Gibbs + Annie G. Don't remember anything about the game or who won but there were distractions and trash talk through the whole thing. MJG attempts to throw off the rookie (me) with a moon, but I have her step left to line up the shot as I bank it into the cup. It was the perfect shot and a memory that will be in my mind forever. Another great fact I learned about Gibbs on that SB was the secret to how to get her to rally. On one late night, the dance party started to dwindle and Gibbs had retired to bed a few hours earlier. Someone finally noticed that she was not longer strutting her stuff so they decided to make one last effort to reignite the dance party and played "Man In The Mirror" by MJ. It worked, not more than a minute into the song we see Gibbs dancing her way down the stairs and the party was back on!

We all have great memories of Gibbs, and we know that even as life takes her in new directions, the name of Melissa Gibbs will live on as one of WS's greats. Gibbs led Woman Scorned from a savage team to the first ever nationals team. Her legacy will not soon be forgotten, and her influence will carry this team long after she has left.

So happy birthday Gibbs! I know 23 was a good one for you, I hope 24 is great too!
