Mardi Gras "oh ten"

Even with all of the count downs and preparation emails to psych us up for this tournament, none of us could control what the anticipation of our first spring tournament would bring. In true Mardi Gras tradition, Lauren and Chuck were put in charge of playing cupid to mix up the Iowa State Men's and Women's teams into groups for the 18 hour car ride. This car ride has been the root of many epic Iowa State frisbee stories back, even back in the dark ages, and it always proves to the perfect chance to really get to know each other.

With the first wave of Stater-ultimaters leaving Thursday at 4 PM and the second at 9 PM, we were off (plus a car full headed down on Friday to make it just in time for games)! Due to growing teams and lacking team vehicles, the cars were FULL-not just a little full, but I mean really full, cuddle with your neighbor full. The drive from Ames to St. Louis was rather uneventful, although a little snowy for those leaving at 9 PM. All was made right when everyone arrived at Butcher's house in St. Louis and his parents made us a delicious breakfast. Shortly after, around 5 AM, we headed out with all of the Thursday cars together. With gas/bathroom breaks along the way, shenanigans obviously occurred. In my memory they all blur together and what happened where is completely smudged, but there were frisbees thrown in parking lots-hitting innocently parked cars, dance parties seemed to congregate around Olk's car- due to the sub woofers he was packing, and Red Bull actually doubled its total sales from 2009 just from our teams' consumption.

Despite a "horrible snow storm" in Mississippi, we made it safely to New Orleans, just in time to eat some for Jazz's favorite Popeye's Chicken before the parade. The parade was pretty sweet, and it is safe to say that everyone got plenty of beads and might have learned that meaning of "Who Dat?". With our buddies in arm, many of us headed off to Bourbon Street to try to collect a few more beads.

Bourbon Street was quite eventful:
-Lauren got intimate with the protesters, which earned her a new nickname and a new on field chant
-We ran into some Saucy Nancy and Tsunami ladies, hustling for beads
- We lost Butcher and Olk

After freezing our butts off in New Orleans, we hopped in the cars to head back to the hotels in Baton Rouge to get some sleep before the next day's tournament.

Day one started off with Woman Scorned's theft of a majority of the cars-leaving ISUC packed like 7 to a vehicle. As we walked on to the fields (back in black) we knew that this weekend was going to be a great one. There was standing water EVERYWHERE! A warm up jog, some plyos, and some fist pumping brought us quickly into our first game.

Game 1: Scorned vs. Truman State "TSUnami"

Coming off the line, extremely excited and pumped, we started the game off well against some old friends... TSU 1-0. After some recooperation and concentration (their dang bright colored skirts are just so awesome its hard not to look at them), we got our grips and even things out with a D by Mag, score from J-Rick. We traded points a few more times with our scores by Mag, Pesch, and Hoistad. This game could be summarized by us stretching our legs and makin D's. D list: Cassie, Hoistad, MAg, Ashley (rookie!), Jessy (poach D), Tasha, Britt, Lauren, & Jiear.

Final Score: 13-6 WS

Game 2: Scorned vs. Notre Dame

Coming off of our first spring win, we headed straight into our second game, quickly going up 2-0. The first point included some excitement with a D from Lauren, followed by a sick bid by Jazz, leaving her with a HUGE mouth full o' muddy end zone water and an RTO in the stat book. Point 4 for us, was earned
through an awesome huck from Magical Liu to Love in the end zone, but sadly Magic momentarily loses her powers after a sweet D in the next point and gets skied high by Notre Dame. Point 5 is stuck in our minds forever with a huge collision that included ND's booty shorts girl gettin some mud in places that it should not be. 5-2 WS. Point 6 included an explosion from Jazz (which has "in her pants" after in the stat book) after she sends one to Mag for the score. We got to run our zone-0 around point 7 & 8, but that ended far too soon for our liking. Notre Dame continues to fight hard as both teams get down in the mud. Point 8 "they pull, bitches be DIRTY,...Jazz Layout D, Jazz negates her D with a TTO, they score" 8-8. After several more points (in which the notebook is temporarily lost), Scorned pulls it back together finishing the game. Final Score: 13-10 WS

Game 3: WS vs. Rice

With the wind picking up, and some scary forehand Rice handlers, scorned starts off forcing backhand. Point one actually officially went to me in the note book "Gap plays Party in the USA...again. Us 0, them 0, Gap 1". We go up 2-0 quickly with a 2nd attempt score by Pesch and a sweet D by Chelle. There is some sideline love as Magic pumps up Banana with a candy popper. Rice scores twice, but WS comes back hard to advance the score to 7-3, taking half with YET ANOTHER Jazz D and Mag to Chelle score. Opening point of second half is exciting- "Jazzy layout D, turn a bunch, Jazz to Tasha SICK Layout to score (cross out "to score") nevermind... RTO :(, they turn, Wastey to Annihka 8-3". All you need to know for the rest of the game is that Lauren jacks the rookies up on Red Bull, Jazz drinks Red Bull, gains wings, gets more D's, and Love has a sick hand block. Woman scorned takes the victory.

Final Score 13-5

Game 4: WS vs. Indiana

Although the game started off to a slow start with 2-2, Scorned pulls it back together to only allow one more score by Indiana. This thing that the Louisiana locals call "Sun" was beating down hard by this point and many WS ladies had fury-filled burnt faces. The day ended on another D-filled game with pretty much everyone getting some disc D in their hands. Pretty excited to shower, we headed back to the hotel.

Final Score: 13-3 WS

After turning the showers black, we headed out in groups to a variety of restaurants. Some margs were in store for the elders and the youngsters enjoyed some Italian food at its best: Olive Garden. After returning from the restaurant, many of the ladies started some socialization with the boys and after it was all said and done, only Jazz and I were left to attend the tournament party. The Truman state ladies were more than nice enough to pick us up and escort us there to enjoy some music, dancing, and boat racing. After catching up with some old friends and proving our BR's team as national champions, we headed back to the hotel for a few short hours of R & R.

Day 2- Singles Awareness day, Jessy Erickson's Bday, Valentine's day

Game 5: Scorned vs. Missouri State "Barely L
egal"

Starting off the day on a much stronger note, Scorned goes up by 5 right away. These points are characterized by a catch in the end zone by lady Pesch as she sits down and the disc is called down, Cassie jacks a girl in the nose with her elbow (may have broke it), Lauren gets a sky D, Cassie with a ferocious D, "Chelle wears an invisible cloak and runs deep", and Ashley tries to stall a girl out at stall count 7-she was very confused :). haha Things start to get exciting as Scorned goes on a strong run, stopping their offense at their second score. Jazz starts handing out sprints for random things from the sideline, and everyone gets a little scared. Tasha gets a point for "best cheer writer" and makes up a sick-ass cheer to party in the USA.

Final Score: 13-2 WS

Quarter-Finals: Scorned vs. TSUnami

Since we couldn't get our fill the first day, TSU comes over to play us again. After schooling them in boat racing the night before, they were pretty intimidated. A bunch of stuff happens (someone else takes the notebook and spells Chelle's na
me Shelly) and we go up 7-2 at half. Jiear gets a point for "sideline enthusiast" and raps a beat with everyone's name in it. Michelle Ng hits up our sideline, threatens to ruin us if we continue to wear skirts, offers to rig Midwest Throw down if we promise to wear shorts, and tries to push her influence over Jazz on the subject. Julie and I make a vow to only wear skirts for all of Michelle's tournaments and to make her a Woman Scorned skirt. We may no longer be playing in half of our tourneys this spring ladies, but WE HAVE OUR DIGNITY! :) Jazz single-handidly ruins Valentine's Day with her cheer-"What's the longest river in the ocean? How do you keep the cows in the fence?" ...Chaos. We score upwind, Jiear time has an amazing layout D in the end zone, Scorned finds their groove. TSU, we love you!

Final Score: 13-2

Semi-Finals Game: Scorned vs. Vanderbilt

This wind picks up as the ladies from Nashville head over to share our bleachers with us. The music is pumping and we quickly learn that these ladies are tight as shit! Vande starts the game out well and goes up by 1. Scorned struggles a little as Jazz calls a vet line to pump things up. Scorned goes up 4-3. After getting back into the groove (probs bc I started to play music between every point) we only allow 2 more
on us to take the win. Jazz has a hand block, Magical Liu grows wings to sky, J-rick has a sick layout score, a double D from the captains, Daisy with a sweet D, everyone storms the field on a score from LP to Daisy, Tasha and Ashley get a few more D's, and that's the game in a nutshell. Scorned chats it up with Vande and then both teams join into a dance party to "Chicken Fried."

Final Score: 13-5 WS

Finals: Scorned vs Iowa- "The game for all the marbles"

Excited that the Central Region has awesome representation in the finals, but still feeling a little pain from the seasons first loss against Saucy, Scorned takes the field with the flip. After a little trash talk, some thoughts on boat racing, and jokes about playing the finals game out back home in the snow, game is on! Both teams come out strong to the song Sandstorm. Hoistad gets a D, but L-Dawg gets a sweeter D with the back of her neck, we score. Jazz is Ding every thing, everywhere. We score a couple more times. Despite Sarah P's D and J-ricks hand block, Iowa scores the next 2 points. Both teams trade points a few times, Magical Liu flies through the air into the end zone for a score and pees herself a little it was so cool. Hoistad with a handy block, Tasha announces that there is wind (suddenly the world makes a little more sense), Jiear cleans up for Jazz-"They pull, Jazz TTO, Jiear D, Jazz TTO, Jiear D, Hoistad to Chelle for score." Chelle gets a handy block, both teams try zoning, Scorned learns to shut down the Saucy dish pass, Magic has yet another layout score, and finally Jessy to Love for the win. Saucy Nancy played a great game, fun time like always!

Final Score: 13-8 WS

After dancing out the first tournament win of our season, Scorned packs up and heads out to catch the boys up north at Burger King. Cars are readjusted and we all endure a stinky 20 hour car ride home through horrific weather. At one point we were all sure that Becca and Hoistad's car was lost forever, but they defeated all odds and made up the 50 mile deficit by not peeing to catch up with us in Iowa. Smelly and tired, we made it back to Ames safely and are pumped to continue our spring season!

Special thanks to Tasha's mom for coming to support us, and congrats to ISUC for placing 3rd!

  1. Oalk = Olk, and you lost Olk and Butcher. I was never lost. Just sayin'. Also unless theres some inside joke I'm pretty sure Magon's last name is Liu. Just sayin'.

  2. My apologies. I wasn't in the search party and that damn Asian spelling of such a simple word- "Loo"

  3. A "loo" is a place where one pees and washes one's hands. A "Liu" is a person who lays out on D and throws the score.

I have other typo/English corrections, but the entire narrative package was so awesome (tear!), I can't bring myself to call you out on them specifically....takes a lot to override my English correction drive!

Love, love the pics, can't wait to see the footage and stats!

  4. Gapstur-- I will rig the tournaments if you promise to wear SHORTS. Serious typo.

AND I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU FOUND SLASH POSTED THAT PICTURE. THAT WAS THE ONE HALF OF ONE GAME WHERE I HAVE EVER WORN A SKIRT. My teammates told me it would make them play better...

Haha, oh man. I expect recaps like this for all of my tournaments as well. Love it.

  5. ok, so maybe it would be beneficial to actually reread these things before I post them, sleep more than 4 hours, and not drink so much while doing it- but let's be honest, they would be A LOT less interesting overall!
