Winter Scrimmage Recap

After entirely too much planning for such a simple event, the day finally arrived. At some point earlier this season, someone said to me, "Hey, we should have a scrimmage with some Central Region teams this winter." It seemed like a great idea, and since SOL and Bella Donna have been the vast majority of our losses this fall and thus our greatest competition (plus I think it might have been Robyn's idea), it only made sense to hit up some Wisconsin teams to see if they would be interested. Both teams' captains hopped right on board and showed excitement to have a little bit of competition in the winter, and so I took up the duty to plan the scrimmage!

Although we wish we could have had more teams come, we were pretty limited by turf availability. As the SOL ladies walked into the Lied Rec, their eyes were popping out of their heads in amazement-what we complain about being too small and inadequate, seemed like a small part of heaven in comparison to their small gym they practice in. As the cars rolled in, so did the ladies of Woman Scorned. After a quick warm up, we took the field and commenced game 1 vs. SOL.

To start the game off right, SOL decided it would be funny to flip for colors only because they wanted to ruin my carefully planned outfit and make me monochromatic in red. Keeping a wide rotation to maximize playing time and prevent injuries, Scorned worked its offense and traded points with SOL. There was plenty of trash talk and jokes made, while both teams struggled a bit to awake from hibernation. Tracie Anderson had some sick grabs and I hope that I will never be playing D on her when a disc goes up deep. Robyn didn't let the turf stop her from laying out so she could get the D and punt it to the end zone, and Anna Hettler worked the disc well, breaking me several times and making me trip over my feet. Scorned had some great plays and really worked our offense, but SOL pulled into the lead after half, and although we didn't really keep score, SOL took the scrimmage.

Game 2 meant a bye for WS, and a chance to grab food or watch the SOL vs. Bella game. I was waaay too lazy to attempt to leave, so I decided to stay, watch, heckle from the sideline, throw a disc around, and catch up with some old friends. I have no idea who won this game and I don't think the score was even kept, but both teams were looking good and it made me a little nervous about Regionals.

Game 3 meant WS vs. Bella Donna. Scorned came out a little more ready to play in this second game, and after a few points (and with the help of Dersch) we were able to figure out their offense a little better and try to adjust to utilize our poaches. Lauren and I stood on the sidelines with speculation and finally came to the conclusion that they were running the "undefendable Star Stack Offense." With tough D on both teams and big throws as well, the battle raged. There were some awesome D's from our younger ladies and our offensive flow began to look a little more natural and efficient. Magical Liu faked an injury in the end zone because she got skied by Georgia Bosscher and was too embarrassed to admit to it. As she writhed on the ground, Mikey Lun speculated that "this could very well be a season-ending calf cramp injury." Like our previous game, the game was fought hard, but Bella came out stronger.

With plenty of extra turf time to spare, the captains of all three teams decided to split up teams into 2 groups and play a sort of mixed teams scrimmage. Team Sex Panther (black) versus team Raptors (white and red), proved to be a quite fun, and allowed some time for the injured folks to head upstairs to pump some iron. With the majority of our turf time used up, we called the game and everyone went to hit the showers before heading to dinner.

Dinner was done on a team basis before the party and each team then split up and headed to their host houses. Hearing everyone call Chelle's house "The Grandma Crib" cracked me up everytime. With houses split up so each had ladies from both teams, mingle time was instore. While Bella finished up dinner at Legends, my SOLmates helped me do some party prep. Robyn and I popped some bubbly in celebration of recent life achievements, and each house got to know their temporary roomies.

Since the service at Legends was a little slower than Culver's (which Sol hit up), over lap time was little to none before the party. As my Sol ladies (plus Pat) headed to the party, Bella came rolling in. A little digestion time was required before we headed out (and I had just downed a Jimmy John's #12-no sprouts), and in the mean time we enjoyed some fruity concoctions that I mixed up from random stuff found in our kitchen. Muffin drank his out of a goblet which he acquired from dinner (which he then forgot at our house-pretty excited about that, not gunna lie). After Bun Bun and Archie received more love than they have gotten in months, we headed out.

With party time in full swing, everyone was looking pretty lively. Our own Jasmine Draper played "Super host," giving out back rubs, ten dollar bills, and umm love dedications? to the ladies of SOL and BD. All the while she abused her own team, leaving all Scorned ladies with bruises and beverage soaked clothes. Bella Donna cleaned up in BP, while SOL won the (unofficial, definitely not UBRPA sanctioned-Ultimate Boat Racing Players Assoc.) boat race. To be fair here, we hardly even had our B team out, we were plagued with Jazz, and Martha was standing in on the WS side. Still undefeated, still national champs-no worries.

Dancing got serious as several of our ISUC guys DJ'ed it up in the corner. As magic floated through the air, a circle formed and ladies stepped in to the middle to give a little preview of what each plans to bring to Centex Dance-Off. After some time, Julie (now a BD but formerly a fellow Iowa Stater) suggested a trip to Welch to further some of the ladies' Ames experiene. After a cold walk, some pool playing, and a bit more Saturday night fun, groups headed homeward to their respective houses. While cowboy boots seemed like a good idea at the beginning of the night, they proved to be a slippery, bad decision in the snow and ice. Saved by Lady Pesch and Chuck, myself and several ladies staying at the LLC were picked up and escorted the remaining distance safely.

From all angles of this scrimmage (besides the actual scrimmage) the score board ended looking like this:

Party winners:
1st-Jasmine Draper (I don't think anyone would disagree)
2nd- Robyn Fennig (As far as I know, she partied the latest)
3rd- Jenny Gaynor (she handled the potion that ended me)

BP winners:
Frances and McKain

Flip cup winners:
umm I was gone, but I hear L-Dawg & Alex cleaned up? Butcher, Keiser, Bris, and some BD ladies, but definitely not Joe.

Wrongfully but definitely justified creeper award:
Joe Brisbois

Dance party winner:
Anna Hettler

Overall, the scrimmage was a great success.
All teams involved we able to work on vital aspects of the game, and everyone (except my phone) had a great time. HUGE thanks to the ladies from Bella and SOL for attending and making the weekend awesome. We can't wait to see both teams again soon at some spring tourneys!

  1. Yeah Gap, if we had the gym that you pictured/captioned, I would be thrilled. That picture is much too big to be Zorn Arena...haha.
